What is IUI?

Tests Required before IUI Treatment

Before starting IUI treatment, you’ll need a thorough medical exam and fertility tests. Your partner will be examined and tested as well. This could include:

Screening for sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and other infectious diseases.
Blood tests.

Your healthcare provider may recommend taking folic acid (included in most prenatal vitamins) at least three months before conception (or IUI treatment).

Steps Involved in IUI Treatment

Ovulation Monitoring: As sperm must be placed during ovulation, the right timing is essential. This can be done by using a medical monitoring device or ovulation prediction kits to track it.
Sperm Preparation: For the selection of high-quality sperm, a sperm sample is taken and "washed" on the day of insemination.
Insemination:A fast, painless treatment is performed by placing a catheter through the uterus and the sperm is injected directly into the uterus.

Single Open Fallopian Tube: Success rates vary, with higher rates when the unblocked tube is closer to the uterus.
Male Factor Infertility: Around 16.9% success rate.

Age: Age is a crucial factor in determining the success rate of the IUI procedure. The conception rates drop significantly as you progress in age due to decreasing egg quality. You may require many repeated IUI cycles to conceive.

Under 35 years, the IUI success rate is 13%
35 to 37 years - 10% success rate
38 to 40 years - 9% success rate
Over 40 years - 3 to 9% success rate

IUI has the lowest success rates in situations where.

You have moderate to severe endometriosis
Your male partner has a low sperm count (unless you wish to use a sperm donor)
You have severe fallopian tube disease
You have had multiple pelvic infections

1. When is IUI recommended?

Ans. IUI is recommended when couples experience unexplained infertility as well as cervical hostility in the female patient and male infertility. When these conditions impact the ability of sperms to enter through the cervix into the uterus and fertilise the egg, IUI is the preferred treatment option.

2. When is IUI not recommended?

Ans. In some cases of infertility, females may experience low ovarian reserve, infections in cervix making a hostile environment for sperms, tubal diseases where both fallopian tubes are compromised, and moderate to severe cases of endometriosis. In such cases, IUI is not a recommended process; rather, in vitro fertilisation would be the preferred option with better outcomes.

3. Is IUI better than IVF?

Ans. The use case for IUI and IVF are different and the success rate of either depends on the patient’s case. IUI is a less invasive procedure that requires hormonal stimulation in the female and collected/donor sperms are placed inside the uterus; IVF in comparison requires more steps including ovum pickup, fertilisation of egg and sperm in the laboratory, laser assisted hatching, and embryo transfer.

4. Is it safe to have intercourse before and after IUI?

Ans. It is suggested that the male partner abstains from ejaculating for 2-3 days before the collection of a semen samples in order to collect the maximum number of sperms and ensure their quality. After the procedure is performed, it is safe to have sexual intercourse 3-4 days later.

5. Will all of our eggs be injected?

During ICSI, efforts are made to inject as many eggs as possible. However, only mature eggs can be injected with sperm. Although immature eggs are incubated with sperm, the chances of fertilization are low. Typically, about 75% to 80% of the eggs retrieved can be injected.
