For an infertile couple who needs IVF or test tube treatment, the eggs are retrieved from the woman. She is given hormonal treatment and when the eggs are mature, they are retrieved under Sonography guidance through the vagina. The eggs are then fertilised with her husband’s sperms and the embryo is transferred into her uterus.

In some cases when this is not possible then the woman’s eggs are replaced by the donor eggs The following cases would need an egg donor

Premature Ovarian failure. Here the woman’ s ovaries have failed earlier than normal . The reasons could of genetic origin, surgery for endometriosis or ovarian malignancy or it could be due to unknown reasons.
A menopausal woman wanting to get pregnant
An elderly woman of 35 and beyond not having good quality or less eggs I.e. she has a Poor ovarian reserve.
Patients who have repeated IVF failures due to poor quality eggs

The donor is selected using strict criteria as per ART Law. The eggs are taken from an unknown donor. The donor is of young age and her physical characteristics are matched to the recepient . She should be married and have at least one child or more children and the children are all normal . The blood test are done of the donor to confirm that she doesn’t have any disease that can be transmitted . She is also tested for thalassemia. The Sonography of the donor is done to rule out any pelvic pathology . She should not have any medical illnesses like Hypertension or Diabetes.

The couple is counselled about the need to use donor eggs. They are reassured about the selection criteria. All legal consents are taken . And only then the treatment is begun .

The donor is given hormonal treatment for stimulating her ovaries, response is judged by doing follicular Sonography and egg retrieval planned when the eggs are mature. Simultaneously the recepient’s uterus is also prepared by hormonal tablets to accept the embryo. The extra embryos could be frozen. The recepient continues with the hormonal support till 12 weeks of pregnancy in case of a pregnancy. The success rate with donor eggs is extremely good.

General examination is done thoroughly. Her weight, Blood Pressure, General health, presence of anemia, CVS and Respiratory system is checked.

 Physical checkup – Chest X ray, ultrasound sonography of pelvis.
 Blood Tests – Blood group, CBC, HIV, HbsAg, HCV, Serum TSH, Serum AMH, Thalassemia.
