A woman is said to be in a menopausal state when she does not get her periods for one year after her last periods. And she should not have any bleeding or even spotting through her vagina after her menopause . The uterus shrinks in size, the ovaries also shrink and the endometrial lining is only 4 mms on Sonography
However, at times she could experience bleeding many years after she reaches menopause. This needs urgent attention and should not be ignored. It could be a signal of some pathological condition in the endometrium.
A pelvic Sonography will give a clue of the endometrial thickness and if it is more than 4 mms , if needs further evaluation . Hysteroscopy is excellent in this evaluation. An endometrial polyp can be excised Hysteroscopically .
An endometrial biopsy will rule out Malignancy and further treatment can be planned.
An endometrial polyp is excised using a bipolar resectoscope through the Hysteroscope. A Hysteroscopic evaluation is better than a blind DNC as the pathology can visualized through the Hysteroscope and operated upon.
